A Hidden Greek Island – Discovering Agistri

 A Greek Paradise – Agistri

I have to say I am lucky to have a mother who is as interested in seeing the world as I am, she is the reason we found this beauty called Agistri back in August 2018.

A stunning small Greek island sitting in the Saronic Gulf, close to the islands of Aegina and Poros. Its proximity to Athens and the rest of the Saronic islands makes it a popular holiday destinations for locals however, it goes under the radar for the rest of the world which is why visiting here was so special.

Getting there:

Now, this island wouldn’t be so beautiful and quiet if it didn’t take a little bit of hassle to get there but what’s a holiday without a bit of adventure!
Once we landed in Athens airport we got the Athens Metro Line 3 (Blue Line towards Dimotiko Theatre) train directly to Piraeus, it takes an hour and cost around £9 per adult.
A quick six-minute walk from the metro station will bring you to Piraeus port, where you can catch the ferry. The ferry goes 3 times a day and it takes 1 hour 35 minutes to reach Agistri, it costs around £8, we docked in the village of Skala.

The Island:

If a relaxing getaway is what you seek, then Agistri is definitely the right place. Agistri has crystal waters with calm seas and long sandy beaches, as well as stunning greenery with pine tree forests. Not to mention the cafes, bars and restaurants all selling the freshest and tastiest sea food.

Accommodation:

Our hotel, conveniently named Agistri Hotel, was situated in Skala. It is one of the oldest hotel units on the island, so a bit on the rustic side and very simplistic but it was cute and a convenient location, 30m from the beach and only 100m from the port, also fantastic value for money. We were also able to use the swimming pool at their sister hotel Yianna, a 6 minute walk.

Food/drink:

Meliritton Cafe Bar – The best pancakes ever!!

To Agistri – traditional Fish Taverna

Toxotis Restaurant  – Greek Kebabs, sea food

Quattro Resto/Bar – Bar snacks and drinks

Things to do:

  • I won’t lie – Agistri isn’t packed with activities. Its charm lies in its tranquility, and you truly have to embrace the opportunity to relax. I spent most of my time at Skala Beach with its white sandy shoreline and crystal clear water. There are plenty of sunbeds available and lots of bars/resturants around.
  • To explore the island, hop on the local bus which you can find in front of the church of Agioi Anargyroi. This is a great way to discover other villages such as Megalochori.
  • You can also take a short ferry ride (just 4.5 nautical miles) to the beautiful neighboring island of Aegina and discover its gorgeous beaches and pretty town
  • Hike the beautiful landscapes, you will see some breathtaking views.
